This doesn't mean these skills are worthless. It means the signal employers are sending has changed, and your positioning should reflect that.
The Declines Worth Understanding
Bloomberg and Prometheus / Grafana — Near-Complete Disappearance
Bloomberg and Prometheus / Grafana have both dropped from appearing in effectively all postings to just 1% — a 99-percentage-point decline. This almost certainly reflects a data correction or early tracking artifact rather than a real-world collapse in demand. That said, the current state is clear: these tools are being called out in almost no Account Executive postings today. Bloomberg is largely a finance and data terminal skill; Grafana and Prometheus are infrastructure monitoring tools more native to DevOps and engineering roles. If you were listing these on an AE resume, they were likely never the right emphasis. Neither is being "replaced" — they were likely never a genuine expectation for this role at scale.
Penetration Testing — Down 97 Points
Penetration testing dropping from broad inclusion to just 3% of postings is a meaningful signal. This skill likely surged during a period when cybersecurity vendors were hiring AEs who could speak technically to security buyers. That trend appears to have cooled. Employers may now prefer AEs who understand the business context of security sales rather than those with hands-on technical testing skills — a job better left to sales engineers and pre-sales specialists. If you're in cybersecurity sales, deep technical credentials still have value, but explicitly leading with penetration testing in your resume or applications for AE roles is increasingly misaligned with what hiring managers are asking for.
NIST / ISO 27001 — Down 77 Points, Still Relevant at 23%
NIST and ISO 27001 frameworks are still appearing in nearly one in four postings — so this isn't a story about irrelevance. But the sharp decline from near-universal inclusion suggests these compliance frameworks were briefly over-indexed in job descriptions, possibly during a wave of security-focused hiring. At 23%, this is now a differentiator in specific verticals (healthcare, finance, government-adjacent SaaS) rather than a universal requirement. If you sell into regulated industries, it's still worth mentioning — but it's no longer a must-have to flag on every application.
Salesforce CRM — Down 55 Points, Still in Nearly Half of Postings
Salesforce CRM at 45% is the most nuanced entry on this list. The decline likely reflects two dynamics happening simultaneously: Salesforce is becoming so standard that many employers no longer bother listing it, and a growing minority of companies are moving toward alternatives like HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics, or newer AI-native CRM tools. Salesforce fluency is still genuinely valued — but explicitly marketing yourself as a "Salesforce expert" may be less differentiating than it was two or three years ago. The skill is increasingly assumed rather than celebrated.
What This Means for Account Executives Right Now
- Shift your resume emphasis toward outcomes, not tools. As CRM proficiency becomes assumed and technical skills recede from AE postings, hiring managers are focusing more on pipeline metrics, quota attainment, deal velocity, and territory growth. Lead with numbers.
- In cybersecurity sales, lean into business fluency over technical depth. Skills like understanding buyer personas, navigating procurement cycles, and translating risk into business impact are appearing with greater frequency. Leave the pentest knowledge for the SE team.
- Don't abandon Salesforce — just don't over-index on it. If you have multi-CRM experience (Salesforce plus HubSpot, or experience with AI-assisted forecasting tools), that breadth is now more compelling than depth in any single platform.
The job posting data doesn't tell you everything, but it tells you what employers are actively signaling. Right now, the signal for Account Executives is clear: technical specificity is receding, and commercial acumen is ascending.
